Stuff plenty of people will have heard.. :) 'Featuring the Dramatics' - Farben (Klang) 12" 'Personal Rock' - Gramm (Source) CD These are both releases by the same guy, Jan Jelinek. Texturally both remind me of acts like SND or less lush acts on Chain Reaction, eg. Substance. Very discrete, clear sounds, with extremely low bass and extremely high ticking and clicking percussion. Musically, both releases certainly develop much more obviously than most minimal releases, while definitely keeping within the minimal mould. Muted housey chords pulse away on some tracks, twisted synth strings and 8-bit arcade sounds come and go, and the odd sampled live drum sounds or stand up bass-line creep into the mix. If I can go with the least specific adjective in the universe, his stuff is really warm. Nice and dreamy, and it leaves me with a big smile. I mean, sheesh, one of the Farben tunes even has 'Ring My Bell' style disco percussion (doow! doow!). :-D While the Farben stuff isn't exactly going to be pounding on the dancefloor, it'd still go down well in a club, which isn't really the case for the Gramm stuff. There are a couple of faster, 4-to-the-floor tunes, but mainly it's really slow and subdued in a way that's more conducive to sleeping than dancing. Anyway, I'd highly recommend both of them, although I'd say that a whole listen to the album can get a bit much for me. Mimic and the Model (Mimic and the Model (?) ) 12" Hmm.. not what I was expecting. People had talked of Kit Clayton's stuff on ~scape as being more dubby than earlier outings, so for some reason I presumed this 12" would be more on the minimal techno side of things. But, well, no. It's generally beatless gurgly sounds layered in often arhythmic echoes. Having said that, I do like it, and there's often a definite rhythm underpinning things, but I was hanging out for some beats.
